Looks like there could be a Gypsy reunion on the small screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Broadway diva Patti LuPone has just signed on to co-star in Open Books, the CBS sitcom pilot which stars her daughter from the 2008 Gypsy revival, Laura Benanti. Who does she play? Benanti's tough-cookie mother, naturally.
Written by former Will & Grace scribe Gail Lerner, Open Books centers on June (Benanti), a book editor at a boutique New York publishing house.
Although best known for her work in blockbuster musicals including Evita, Anything Goes, Sunset Boulevard and Gypsy, LuPone has enjoyed a healthy TV career as well. She played Libby Thacher on the hit series Life Goes On from 1989 through 1993, and has appeared as a guest star on many shows including Remember WENN, Law & Order, Frasier, Touched by an Angel, Will & Grace, Oz, Ugly Betty and 30 Rock.
Benanti and LuPone were both honored with Tony Awards for their work in Gypsy. In other book news, The New York Times is reporting that LuPone has enlisted fans to suggest a title for a book she is writing about her life in the theater. The winning entry will receive an autographed book, two tickets to La LuPone's next theatrical venture and a shout-out from the stage.
