Broadway alums Hannah Waddingham and Jenna Russell will star in Regent Park's Open Air Theatre production of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods, closing the London company's 2010 season. The show, directed by Timothy Sheader, begins performances August 5, with opening set for August 11. The limited engagement plays through September 11.
Waddingham (as the Witch) and Russell (and the Baker's Wife) lead a cast that also features Marc Antolin, Valda Aviks, Billy Boyle, Gaye Brown, Sophie Caton, Alice Fearn, Mark Goldthorp, Amy Griffiths, Mark Hadfield, Amy Ellen Richardson, Ben Stott and Gemma Wardle. The show presents Sondheim's unqiue spin on the stories of the Brothers Grimm, as each are given a dark and humorous twist.
Waddingham was nominated for an Olivier Award for her appearence as Desiree in Sondheim's A Little Night Music. She hs appeared as the Lady of the Lake in Spamalot on both the West End and Broadway, as well as in The Beautiful Game, Tonight's the Night and Grease.
Russell won an Olivier Award for her turn in Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George. The production subsequently transferred to Broadway, where she was nominated for the Tony Award. On the British stage, she has starred in Les Miserables, On a Clear Day and Born and Bred.
Into the Woods will be preceeded by The Crucible (May 24-June 19), starring Patrick O'Kane and Emma Cunniffe; The Comedy of Errors (June 24-July 31), featuring Jo Herbert and Daniel Weyman; and a family-friendly re-imagining of Macbeth (July 3-July 31), starring Golda Rosheuvel and Josephine Butler.
