Stars of the hit Broadway musical Memphis will greet fans at an in-store performance and CD signing at Barnes & Noble Lincoln Center on April 6 at 4:00 PM. The event celebrates the release of the show's original cast recording on March 30.
On hand to perform will be cast members Chad Kimball, Montego Glover, Derrick Baskin, J. Bernard Calloway, James Monroe Iglehart and Cass Morgan, joined by composer David Bryan of Bon Jovi, librettist Joe DiPietro and choreographer Sergio Trujillo. The Memphis CD includes 19 songs from the acclaimed new tuner, as well as a bonus acoustic version of "The Music of My Soul" with piano and vocals by Bryan.
With a score that mixes gospel, rhythm and blues and early rock 'n' roll stylings with a contemporary sensibility, Memphis follows the story of Huey Calhoun (Kimball), a young white radio disc jockey growing up in Memphis in the 1950s. Fueled by the music he hears in the black bars on Beale Street, Huey’s on-air antics and unstoppable enthusiasm for “race records” creates a new white audience for African-American music. Then he falls in love with beautiful black singer Felicia Farrell (Glover), and his personal life transcends the race line, too, with grave consequences.
