After four excruciating months, Glee is back! The spring premiere “Hell-O” re-introduces New Directions through greeting-themed songs. Hot off their win at sectionals, the glee crew returns to McKinley High with fearless leader Mr. Schuester back on top. There’s little time to celebrate, though, as the Glee Club is reminded of the dangers that await when facing their regional rivals, Vocal Adrenaline.
As always, there are messy romances aplenty: Quinn and Puck’s affair has turned into an actual relationship, while Finn finally decides to duet lovingly with Rachel… only to find her crazy behavior too much to handle. Rachel quickly snags a new beau, Vocal Adrenaline lead singer Jesse St. James (played by none other than Lea Michele’s former Spring Awakening co-star Jonathan Groff), thanks to a chance encounter at a music store set to Lionel Richie’s “Hello.” (Of course!) Rachel’s friends are highly suspicious of her new man’s motives, forcing her to hide the fledgling relationship.
Here are some of out favorite moments from this episode of Glee:
BEST MUSICAL MOMENT
After Finn’s endless toying with Rachel’s emotions, it’s awesome to see her stick up for herself with a pointed rendition of All American Rejects’ “Gives You Hell.” But if we had to pick just one musical highlight (and we hate to be a traitor to McKinley High), it would our beloved Jonathan Groff stealing the show with AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell.” The number is short but thrilling, yet Groff shows off why he makes us (and everyone we know) swoon—even if he’s playing a potential evildoer.
MEMORABLE SINISTER SUE GROSS-OUT
Did you doubt Sue Sylvester would wreak havoc despite her suspension? We knew she’d be back to throw zingers at her usual punching bag (Mr. Schuester’s hair, of course), but we didn’t see her stunt with Principal Figgins (um, she calls him “my Maharishi”) to ensure her reinstatement as the Cheerios coach. How’d she do it? This quote says it all: “After our conciliatory dinner, I know there is nothing you won’t eat whipped cream off of.” Ew.
DIVA-OFF
Who is a bigger diva: Rachel or Jesse? In their first meeting Jesse puts down Rachel’s rendition of “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” ("Your performance was flawed…you totally lacked Barbra’s emotional depth.”) Imagine the impact of those words! He also flaunts his own achievements. (“I’ve got a full ride to a little school called the University of California Los Angeles. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. It’s in Los Angeles.”) This diva match is sure to continue. Let’s call it a draw.
HAPPIEST PLOT TWIST
Before Glee's hiatus, we hated watching Will victimized by the misguided antics of his wife Teri. But we're happy to report he’s now Teri-free! It seemed like a done deal that the spring would find Will embracing his formerly repressed affections for Emma. Not so fast. Despite overlooking Emma’s OCD and virginity (!), Will realizes she might not be the one for him. Wha? Yeah, we told you it’s a nice twist. Turns out, Mr. Shue needs to find himself. (Did you see that coming?)
BIGGEST OMG! MOMENT
OK, so you want Will and Emma to get together—let this be your consolation: He makes out with (are you sitting down?!) Vocal Adrenaline coach Shelby Corcoran. First of all, that’s the opposing team. But more importantly, the rival’s leader is played by none other than Tony winner Idina Menzel. OMG! Feel better about Emma and Will’s undecided fate now? Us, too.
