One of the 2010 spring season’s final shows is also one of the most anticipated: Oscar winner Denzel Washington and Tony winner Viola Davis go head to head in the Broadway revival of August Wilson’s Fences. The celebrated co-stars sat for a portrait with superstar photographer Annie Leibovitz for the May issue of Vogue, but they weren’t outfitted in the latest from Tom Ford or Versace. Washington wears the coveralls of his character, garbage collector Troy Maxon, and Davis dons a vintage cotton dress and apron appropriate for 50s-era housewife Rose Maxon.
“Theater is an actor’s medium,” Washington tells reporter Adam Green (son of Adolph Green and Phyllis Newman). “Once the curtain goes up, it really belongs to you.”
The May issue of Vogue, featuring theater vet Sarah Jessica Parker on the cover, hits newsstands April 20. Fences opens at Broadway's Cort Theatre on April 26.
