Viva La Vie Boheme! Rent Tops Weekend Poll as Favorite Rock Musical

After a weekend of voting, Broadway.com Rent-heads reminded us there’s still “no day but today,” declaring Rent their favorite rock musical of all time.

The 1996 Pulitzer Prize- and Tony-winning show, which ran on Broadway for more than 12 years, pulled in 31% of the votes. In second place was another Pulitzer winner, current Broadway hit Next to Normal, which received 23% of the votes. Third place went to the 2006 Tony-winning tuner Spring Awakening, directed by Michael Mayer (also the director of the soon-to-open Green Day rock musical American Idiot, which inspired the poll), with 17% of the votes.

A surprisingly strong vote getter was notorious flop Dance of the Vampires, which received a very respectable 12%, more than the musical that arguably began the entire rock musical trend, Hair (6%).
