Alan Cumming has withdrawn from the upcoming Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark due to “a scheduling conflict,” a spokesperson told Broadway.com. The Tony winner was announced to play Norman Osborn (a.k.a the Green Goblin) in the new musical, directed by Julie Taymor. The show lost another headliner last month when Evan Rachel Wood parted ways with the production for the same reason.
“Because of a scheduling conflict, Alan Cumming will not be playing the role of the Green Goblin in Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark on Broadway,” a spokesperson told Broadway.com. “Casting and a production schedule for Spider-Man will be announced soon."
Still confirmed for the tuner is Reeve Caney as Peter Parker. The musical was written by Tony winner Taymor and Glen Berger, and features music and lyrics by U2's Bono and The Edge. It follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down—literally—when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and wakes up the next morning clinging to his bedroom ceiling. Suddenly endowed with astonishing powers, this bullied science geek soon learns, however, that with great power comes great responsibility as villains test not only his physical strength but also his strength of character.
Cumming won the Tony, Drama Desk and Theatre World Awards for his performance in Cabaret. His other Broadway credits include The Threepenny Opera and Design For Living. His films include the soon-to-be-released The Tempest (directed by Taymor), Titus (also directed by Taymor), X2: X-Men United, Sweet Land, The Spy Kids Trilogy, Eyes Wide Shut and The Anniversary Party, which he wrote and directed. His London stage appearances include Hamlet, Accidental Death of an Anarchist (Olivier Award), Bent and The Bacchae. He also has a recurring role on the hit TV show The Good Wife, which will continue next season.
