The official press opening for MCC Theatre's off-Broadway production of Beth Henley’s Family Week, directed by Academy Award winner Jonathan Demme, has been delayed by one week. The play, which began previews at the Lucille Lortel Theater on April 9, was originally slated to open April 27. Opening night will now be held on May 4. The limited engagement plays through May 23.
“Jonathan and Beth have been collaborating on Family Week for quite some time now,” MCC Co-Artistic Director Bernard Telsey said in a statement. “MCC prides itself on being a laboratory for the development of plays and for artists to explore and experiment with new ideas. We are more than happy to give this production the necessary time for our creative team to continue working on this wonderful play.”
Family Week stars Kathleen Chalfant, Rosemarie DeWitt, Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Sami Gayle.
In Family Week, Claire (DeWitt) checks into a recovery center in the desert, searching for a way to cope with the death of her son. When her mother, daughter and sister arrive to participate in "family week," long-dormant traumas collide with recent tragedies in surprisingly comical, shocking and moving ways.
An earlier version of the play received a commercial off-Broadway production at Century Center in 2000 with a cast that included Rose Gregorio, Angelina Phillips, Carol Kane and Julia Weldon, directed by Ulu Grosbard.
