Euan Morton, Jeremy Kushnier and Jill Paice will star in Signature Theatre of Virginia’s forthcoming revival of Chess. Directed by Signature artistic director Eric Schaeffer, the musical will run August 10-September 26 at the MAX Theatre in Arlington, VA.
Chess centers on the Cold War-era battle between two chess champions, American Freddie Trumper (Kushnier) and Russian Anatoly Sergievsky (Morton), with manager Florence Vassy (Paice) as the third point in a romantic triangle. Featuring music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus and lyrics by Tim Rice, the show played a 68-performance run on Broadway in 1988 but has since found favor in concert versions. The score includes “One Night in Bangkok,” “Anthem,” “I Know Him So Well,” “Nobody’s Side” and “Pity the Child.”
Morton is currently appearing on Broadway in Sondheim on Sondheim and was nominated for a Tony for playing Boy George in Taboo. Kushnier has starred on Broadway in Footloose and Rent and toured as Tommy DeVito in Jersey Boys. Paice has appeared on Broadway in Curtains and The 39 Steps and played Scarlett O’Hara in the London production of Gone with the Wind.
