The title of the latest Gleepisode “The Power of Madonna” says it all. Not only does the Glee Club (and the entire school) fall under the influence of the legendary pop star, they also harvest her magnetism to express their own inner power—in other words, everyone is asking themselves WWMD? And you can thank your “Lucky Star” the crew manages to belt out a total of seven (!) Madonna tracks.
Surprisingly, it’s the musically adverse Sue who kicks off the McKinley High Madge obsession, noting that she credits Madonna for her incredibly strong—let’s call it—fortitude. Realizing the blond ambition that the chart-topping queen can cause, Mr. Schuester joins in on the Madonna frenzy. He assigns the students songs from her incredible catalog with the goal of empowering the girls and bringing some sensitivity to the guys. Check out our favorite moments below!
SPRING AWAKENING FLASHBACK (A.K.A. TOUCHED FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME)
As Rachel struggles with her decision to lose her virginity to Jesse, Broadway fans flash back to watching Wendla and Melchior fall in love in Spring Awakening. Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff tear into the fittingly titled Madonna classic “Like A Virgin” in Rachel's room instead of Spring's "The Word of Your Body." Memories!
AH-HA: CONFESSIONS
We all know Sue loves to mock Mr. Schue’s luscious locks. (Two examples from this episode: “I just lost my train of thought because you have so much margarine in your hair.” And the one that made us rewind the DVR for a second round of laughs: “I thought I smelled cookies from the tears of elves weeping that live in your hair.”) But what is it that makes Sue so obsessed? Well, the sinister cheerleading coach has a confession to make, and it stars that green-eyed monster jealousy—and memories of her childhood.
(ALMOST) SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY
After lying to her friends about her continuing relationship with Jesse, Rachel gets a big shock when Jesse shows up at Glee Club practice. Not only does he announce he’s transferred to McKinley High, but he’s also left Vocal Adrenaline to join New Directions and be closer to Rachel. (Stalker much?) The kids still aren’t sure if they can trust Jesse. And as if that isn’t enough team trading, Kurt and Mercedes decide to join the Cheerios, so they can grab a bit more limelight. Let’s just say it works.
OMG FASHION MOMENT (A.K.A. STRIKE A POSE, SUE!)
In a surprise collaboration with the Glee Club’s Kurt and Mercedes (see above), Sue stars in a nearly exact recreation of Madonna’s “Vogue” video (although she did add a few of her own lyrics). Sue sports some serious black suits, but it’s her post-video donning of the infamous Madonna cone bra that's a real knee-slapper. “I poked a couple of kids’ eyes out before second period today,” she deadpans about her pointy accessory. Beauty's where you find it!
