Composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim has given Broadway wild tales: a vengeful barber, tortured artists, conflicted lovers and even The Frogs, but one story has alluded the stage so far—his own. All that changed on April 22, when Roundabout Theatre Company's Sondheim on Sondheim opened at Studio 54. The new musical, a Sondheim revue-meets-documentary, brought out the composer's many fans and friends, all eager to celebrate the life and work of the octegenarian artist. And while Sondheim's got some major pull, the show, directed by every-award winning director James Lapine, boasts another major draw: the Broadway return of cabaret legend Barbara Cook and her co-stars Vanessa Williams, Tom Wopat as well as Norm Lewis, Euan Morton, Erin Mackey, Leslie Kritzer and Matthew Scott.
