Glee star Lea Michele and God of Carnage’s Jeff Daniels announced the nominations for the 2010 Tony Awards on May 4 at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
Coming out on top of the long list of honorees is the new musical Fela!, which received a whopping 11 nominations including Best Musical. With eight nominations, Memphis was the only other highly recognized new musical of the season. The remaining two Best Musical nominees were American Idiot and Million Dollar Quartet, which received three nods each.
John Logan’s Red, about artist Mark Rothko, received the most overall nominations of all the Best Play nominees. Its seven mentions included acting nominations for its two stars, Alfred Molina and Eddie Redmayne. The new British import Enron received the second most nominations of the plays with four, but was snubbed in the Best Play race in favor of In the Next Room or the Vibrator Play, Next Fall and Time Stands Still.
Well-received revivals of August Wilson’s searing drama Fences and the flamboyant musical La Cage aux Folles, two shows that originally played on Broadway alongside one another in the mid-1980s, were the other big nomination-getters of the day. Fences, which stars Denzel Washington, received 10, while La Cage tied Fela! with the most nominations at 11.
