The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2010 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Valerie Harper
Nominated for Best Actress in a Play, Looped
“This is thrilling! It’s a wonderful win for my husband Tony, he was the lead producer, and our director and playwright, of course. It’s everybody in this endeavor, you never win it on your own. You just don’t. It’s all tears of joy now, you know? This is acknowledgement of our work: it’s big stuff. I think of myself at 18. I was a teenager at the St. James Theatre in Li’l Abner, I got into the chorus—my first Broadway show, so that’s been a long many years, my dear. It’s been since 1958, trumping the boards of Broadway off and on, and it’s always been good to me. I’ve always made my living as a dancer then actress, so this is just an incredible honor. It’s so nice for the show. I wish we had run longer, but we are going to be doing it elsewhere. What would Tallulah say? ‘Ohhh, this is perfectly marvelous, dahling! Perfectly marvelous!’ And it is.”
