The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2010 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Eddie Redmayne
Nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Play, Red
“I don’t think my body is meant to cope with such excitement this early in the morning. I expect a vicious wake-up call in a minute. I found out because I rolled out of bed and turned on the telly and saw the announcements coming out. I saw that the play had been nominated, I saw that Fred [co-star Alfred Molina] had been nominated, that Michael [director Michael Grandage] had been nominated, and I then went online in an attempt to find out how it had gone in the featured [category] and eventually, after literally scurrying nervously for about 15 minutes, I went through all the names. I was suddenly terrified that I was going to let [the production] down. My heart stopped! This is absolutely amazing. I’m like the cat that got the cream: incredibly lucky and thrilled. Doing a play on Broadway is the stuff that dreams are made of. Doing this play specifically, a New York play about a New York artist and getting to do it in the city that it’s based in has been dream-worthy. The idea of a Tony nomination? It sounds so ridiculous coming out of my mouth! I just described it to my mom as being the ultimate cherry on the top of a gargantuan cake.”
