The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2010 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Christopher Ashley
Nominated for Best Director of a Musical, Memphis
“I woke up and watched the streaming feed online. I already yelled out loud when Memphis got a nomination [for Best Musical] and it just got better from there. I was just smiling from ear to ear. It’s a fantastic day for the show and I’m so proud of everyone. I just kept getting happier and happier every time they called somebody’s [from Memphis] name. It means a lot in this case, getting a new musical to Broadway takes years and years out of your life and there’s so much communication effort of figuring out all the logistics…so many people have to make the right decisions at the same time, so to have people say you did a great job really touches you. This is very gratifying and I hope it helps the show have a healthy long run. Today couldn’t have gone better.”
