The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2010 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Michael Grandage
Nominated for Best Director of a Play, Red
“I am completely overjoyed and genuinely excited for everybody involved. It’s always lovely to get something for yourself, but there’s nothing nicer than being able to ring your two leading actors and your designer and your lighting designer and your author and all be able to share it together, so it is pretty thrilling. It means a great deal because we love coming over and sharing our work with Broadway audiences. It’s a fantastic place to make theater, and everybody takes theater very seriously in New York in the best sense of the word. We’re all very aware in England of how important the Tonys are in the theater calendar. To bring our work is one thing and then to get recognized for your work through a set of nominations is really, really special for us. I’m in rehearsals right now, and I’ve just taken a tea break, but tonight when we’re finished, I will have a bottle of wine [to celebrate]. I’ll probably do a lot more ringing around because what I haven’t done today is actually be able to get in touch with everybody and speak to them.”
