The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2010 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Sarah Ruhl
Nominated for Best Play, In the Next Room or the Vibrator Play
“I was watching Sesame Street with my four-year-old who’s sick with a fever this morning, and happened to check my email. There was a note from Zak Berkman, the Artistic Director of Epic Theatre, who emailed me saying congratulations. That’s how I found out. I have three babies in the house right now—twins and my four-year-old—so it was a quieter, more internal reaction since the kids were mostly sleeping, but I was so pleased. I loved the process of doing this play and really loved this production, so all the rest of this is gravy. That being said, the Tony Awards are fun! It’s delightful to be included with all those amazing people. I try to have tunnel vision, like a horse being led through fire, when it comes to awards and such, but the theater community is small, so to be acknowledged by your peers feels wonderful. I’ve gotta find a dress now—which should be a challenge since I just had twins!”
