The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2010 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Rob Ashford
Nominated for Best Choreography, Promises, Promises
“I found out online. It’s a wonderful thing that happens at the very same second you find out, your friends start calling. It was nice. I’ve heard from a lot of people today. I was just in a meeting, and I came out and I had 47 emails since I went in there. This means the world to me, especially with the competition in the choreography category this year. There’s so much good work, it’s almost a shame there’s not more room because there are certainly other names that deserve to be on that list as well. I’m just thrilled that I’m one of them. I love choreography—it’s where I began and it’s where my heart is as well. I’m so thrilled for the [nominated Promises, Promises actors]. Sean Hayes is amazing. He’s worked so hard! It’s his first Broadway show—to carry the show on his back that way and do such a good job with such a swift hand is wonderful, and the audience loves it. I’m thrilled for him and for Katie Finneran as well. To me, any time choreography is recognized; it’s really for the dancers, so I’m happy for them today, too. I can’t wait to see them all at the theater tonight. I have friends at the show tonight, so I’m going to be there, and then I’m going to have some nice red wine.”
