The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2010 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Jim Lewis
Nominated for Best Book, Fela!
“Do you know I’m doing laundry right now? You know, life goes on! I actually thought the nominations were at 10am—my agent had to call and give me the news. This is my second nomination—this first one [for Chronicle of a Death Untold] was controversial. This one is thankfully less so. I’m hoping someday maybe they’ll even make me a Tony voter, but I’m getting off subject. The real point is [a nomination] is a great excuse for a party, but overall I’m kind of a quiet person and I don’t really like the limelight, so the awards thing is always surreal. [Co-writer] Bill T. Jones is much better at that than I am. I’m going to do my best to enjoy it. I’m just so grateful the show itself got the recognition it deserves. Being nominated personally is a great thrill, but I’m more hoping the show comes through with flying colors."
