The marquees of Broadway theaters will be dimmed for one minute in memory of Lena Horne on May 11 at 7:00PM. Horne died on May 9 at age 92.
“Lena Horne was a national treasure who broke through racial barriers with the gift of her voice,” Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of the Broadway League, said in a statement. “Her contributions to Broadway were bright, and her legendary talent contributed significantly to the movie musical genre."
Horne’s career began at 16 as a dancer at the Cotton Club nightclub alongside Duke Ellington. In 1934, she made her Broadway debut in
Dance With Your Gods, followed by
Lew Leslie's Blackbirds of 1939. She received a 1958 Tony nomination for the musical
Jamaica and a special Tony in 1981 for her Broadway concert show
Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music.
