Jeff Goldblum will star as Mel in The Old Vic’s production of Neil Simon’s The Prisoner of Second Avenue. This will be the first show the company has produced in the West End. Terry Johnson will direct, with performances beginning June 30 at the Vaudeville Theatre. Opening night is set for July 13.
Goldblum is known for his turns in movies such as The Life Aquatic, Jurassic Park and The Big Chill and is currently featured in the cast of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. He co-starred with Old Vic artistic director Kevin Spacey in the company's 2008 revival of David Mamet’s Speed-the-Plow and appeared on Broadway in The Pillowman. Other stage credits include The Exonerated and Twelfth Night.
The Prisoner of Second Avenue follows the hectic life of a married couple living in Manhattan’s Upper East Side after the husband, Mel (Goldblum), has lost his job. The show opened on Broadway on November 11, 1971, in a production starring Peter Falk and Lee Grant, and ran for 798 performances. No casting for the role of Mel's long-suffering wife, Edna, has been announced.
