Just like the city that inspired it, the Broadway musical Memphis is filled with great tunes. It's no wonder this audience favorite has been nominated for eight 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
Broadway.com is celebrating this musical hit with a series of exclusive music videos featuring the music of the Tony-nominated stars of the show, Montego Glover and Chad Kimball. First up is the Act One tune "Radio," which celebrates the rise of Huey Calhoun (Kimball's character) on the Memphis airwaves. Click here to watch the video!
Set in the turbulent south in the 1950s, Memphis is the story of Calhoun, a white radio DJ whose love of good music transcends race lines and airwaves. Thanks in part to his passionate persistence, "race" music reaches the center of the radio dial, quickly exploding throughout mainstream America. But when Huey falls for Felicia Ferrell (Glover), a beautiful black singer he has set on the path to stardom, whether the world is really ready for this music, and their love, is put to the test.
Memphis features a score with music by David Bryan of Bon Jovi and lyrics by Joe DiPietro. The original cast recording is now available on Rhino Records.
