By the time the 2008 Tony Awards came around, the theater community was well aware of Lin-Manuel Miranda and his ability to freestyle rap about basically anything. So when the charming young composer of In the Heights was awarded the Tony for Best Score, it was only right that he used his talent to express his gratitude. Miranda emotionally took the stage and immediately started to rap his speech, shouting out to his In the Heights family, parents and girlfriend [now fiance] Vanessa. He even paid homage to Stephen Sondheim, referencing the composer's Sunday in the Park with George when he proudly announced "Mr. Sondheim! Look, I made a hat! Where there never was a hat! It's a Latin hat, at that!" He concluded his time in the spotlight with a shout-out to Puerto Rico and a triumphant wave of the Puerto Rican flag, garnering a rousing, and well-deserved, standing ovation.
