Estelle Parsons will join Simon Russell Beale and Jonathan Groff in the West End revival of Ira Levin’s Deathtrap. Parsons replaces the previously announced Anna Massey as psychic Helga ten Dorp. Performances begin at the Noel Coward Theatre on August 21.
Parsons was recently seen on stage as Violet Weston in the Broadway and national tour productions of August: Osage County. She received an Academy Award for her performance in Bonnie and Clyde and played Roseanne Barr’s mother Bev on the hit sitcom Roseanne for nine seasons.
Deathtrap follows famous playwright Sidney Bruhl (Beale) and his relationship with talented, young writer Clifford Anderson (Groff) who he plans to murder and take credit for Anderson’s work as his own. The play made its Broadway debut in 1978 starring John Wood and Victor Garber. Nominated for a Best Play Tony Award, Deathtrap ran for 1,793 performances before closing on June 13, 1982. The play was adapted into a 1982 film directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve.
