Bringing La Cage aux Folles to Broadway for the third time, British director Terry Johnson had some big names to impress—mainly its original creators, Tony winners Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein. While winning a Tony is a huge thrill, Johnson noted that the best part of his experience with the show was receiving their approval. "What a blessing," the director said of the ailing Herman's visit to the Longacre Theatre. "It took Jerry a long time to see the show, but it was the best gift of all when he liked it." As for Harvey? Johnson, doing a dead-on impression of the show's raspy voiced creator, recalled that after seeing the revival, Fierstein commented, "I only have notes for the author!"
