Tony Award-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda and his improv group, Freestyle Love Supreme, will take the stage the the Gramercy Theatre on August 5 for a night of beats, rhymes, off-the-cuff song spinning and general music entertainment.
A freestyle hip-hop troupe, Freestyle Love Supreme features a rotating ensemble of members including Miranda, former In the Heights co-star Christopher Jackson, Tony-nominated In the Heights helmer Thomas Kail, Memphis’ James Monroe Iglehart and more. The group was founded by Miranda and Kail during their time at Wesleyan University on a simple premise: get words from the audience, then use them to inspire new rap songs and build a hip-hop community.
Miranda made his Broadway debut in In the Heights. He spent part of 2008 collaborating with Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents on the Broadway revival of West Side Story, going on to perform for President Obama at the first ever White House Poetry Slam in 2009. Miranda also made his primetime television debut opposite Hugh Laurie in the season six premiere of hit TV series House in September 2009 before reuniting with the In the Heights team to launch the show's first national tour.
