The Roundabout Theatre Company's Broadway revival of classic Cole Porter tuner Anything Goes will debut at the newly renamed Stephen Sondheim Theatre, beginning previews on March 10, 2011, in anticipation of an April 7 opening. As previously reported, Tony Award winner Sutton Foster will star as sea-bound diva Reno Sweeney in a production directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall (The Pajama Game). The revival features an updated book by Timothy Crouse and John Weidman. No other details or casting have been announced at this time.
Stage favorite Anything Goes tells the story of two unlikely pairs set off on the course of true love when they board the S.S. American in a flurry of song, dance, exotic disguises and good old-fashioned blackmail. The score features such classics as the title tune, as well as "You're The Top," "It's De-Lovely," "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" and "I Get a Kick Out of You." The original production, starring Ethel Merman as Reno, debuted at the Alvin Theatre on November 21, 1934, playing 420 performances before closing. An equally memorable Tony-winning revival hit the Vivian Beaumont Theatre in September 1987, starring Patti LuPone as Reno in a production that ran 784 performances before closing on September 3, 1989.
Roundabout's Anything Goes features sets by Derek McLane, costumes by Martin Pakledinaz and lights by Peter Kaczorowski. Additional creative team details will be announced shortly.
