Summertime in Poughkeepsie, NY, means an influx of stars, producers and fans at the annual New York Stage and Film season at Vassar College’s Powerhouse Theater. The previously announced revised concert version of On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (starring Brian d’Arcy James and Anika Noni Rose) is sold out, and reservations are closed for a series of six free readings during the weekend of July 29-August 1. The schedule includes a new screenplay by Tony nominee Jennifer Westfeldt (Wonderful Town, Kissing Jessica Stein ) featuring her longtime love, Mad Men star Jon Hamm, and a new musical by the Spring Awakening team of Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater.
Westfeldt’s screenplay, Friends with Kids, will be read on August 1 at 2:00PM with a cast that includes Hamm and Westfeldt, Rebecca Creskoff, Rosemarie Dewitt, Noah Emmerich and Adam Scott. The musical Umbrage, featuring music by Sheik and book and lyrics by Sater, will be presented on August 1 at 5:00PM featuring Monika Oliveira and other cast members to be announced, directed by Peter Askin.
Also scheduled for readings are Eve Ensler’s I Am An Emotional Girl: The Secret Life of Girls Around the World, Patricia Wettig’s F to M (with a cast that includes her husband, Ken Olin), Kate Walbert’s A Short History of Women and Romulus Linney and Eleanor Cooney’s Over Martinis, Driving Somewhere.
Rounding out the busy weekend will be a workshop presentation of Walton Jones’ musical The 1940s Radio Hour directed by Mark Linn-Baker. For information on these free events, go to www.powerhouse.vassar.edu.
