Tony winner Douglas Hodge has signed on for a six-month extension as Albin in the Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles alongside Tony nominee Kelsey Grammer as Georges. The two actors will continue in their current roles (rather than switching parts, which had been rumored before opening night) until February 13, 2011, when both will depart the production. Winner of the 2010 Best Revival Tony Award, La Cage aux Folles opened on April 18 at the Longacre Theatre, directed by Terry Johnson.
In addition to Hodge and Grammer, the cast of La Cage includes Fred Applegate as M. Dindon/M. Renaud, Veanne Cox as Mme. Dindon/Mme. Renaud, Chris Hoch as Francis, Elena Shaddow as Anne, A.J. Shively as Jean-Michel, Christine Andreas as Jacqueline, Tony nominee Robin De Jesús as Jacob, Heather Lindell as Colette, Bill Nolte as Tabarro and David Nathan Perlow as Etienne. The Cagelles are played by Nick Adams, Nicholas Cunningham, Sean Patrick Doyle, Yurel Echezarreta, Logan Keslar and Terry Lavell. The production also features Christophe Caballero, Todd Lattimore, Dale Hensley, Caitlin Mundth and Cheryl Stern.
La Cage aux Folles features music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and a book by Harvey Fierstein, based on the play by Jean Poiret. The story centers on Georges (Grammer), the suave owner of a glitzy drag club on the French Riviera, and his high-strung star and life partner, Albin (Hodge). The pair live a charmed life until Georges’ son, Jean-Michel (Shively), announces his engagement to the daughter of a conservative right-wing politician who’s coming to dinner.
