Original South Pacific star Matthew Morrison will be unable to return to the role of Lt. Joe Cable for the final weeks of the production’s Broadway run and will miss out on the show’s “Live from Lincoln Center” telecast on August 18. The Tony-winning revival is set to close on August 22 with original cast members Kelli O’Hara (who returns August 10), Paulo Szot, Danny Burstein and Loretta Ables Sayre reunited on stage at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. The role of Lt. Cable is being played by Andrew Samonsky.
Morrison has been busy filming the second season of Glee and is nominated for an Emmy for his performance as glee club advisor Will Schuester. In a recent interview with Broadway.com, O’Hara said of her South Pacific and Light in the Piazza co-star, “He really wants to [return to South Pacific]. It just depends on his shooting schedule. It’s a busy time for Glee and he’s in every episode.”
