Reese Witherspoon, an Oscar winner for playing June Carter Cash in Walk the Line, has another real-life character in mind: Miss Peggy Lee. According to Variety, Witherspoon will star in a biographical film about the iconic singer, and she’s nabbed Nora Ephron to write the screenplay and direct. Wicked producer Marc Platt, Witherspoon’s collaborator on the Legally Blonde films, will produce.
Ephron, whose most recent film credit as director/screenwriter is Julie & Julia, is currently represented off-Broadway by the hit comedy Love, Loss and What I Wore. Witherspoon’s upcoming films include the comedy How Do You Know? and Water for Elephants.
Best known for her jazzy renditions of “Fever” and “Is That All There Is?” Lee also appeared in films such as Pete Kelly's Blues and composed songs for the Disney classic Lady and the Tramp. She began singing as a teenager and continued until her death in 2002 at age 81.
No schedule for filming the Lee biopic has been set.
