Casting has been announced for In Transit, the previously announced new a cappella musical to be presented by Primary Stages at 59E59 Theaters. The show will begin previews on September 21 and open on October 5 for a limited engagement through October 30. Joe Calarco will direct and provide musical staging.
The seven-member cast features Steve French (The Burnt Part Boys) as Bass, Celisse Henderson (Wicked national tour) as Alto, Hannah Laird as Soprano/Ali, Chesney Snow as Boxman, Graham Stevens as Baritone/Nate, Denise Summerford (Taboo, The Rocky Horror Picture Show) as Mezzo/Jane, and Tommar Wilson (Hair, The Music Man, Hairspray) as Tenor/Trent. Laird, Stevens and Summerford appeared in a York Theatre developmental production of the musical in August 2008.
In Transit features a book, music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez, James-Allen Ford, Russ Kaplan and Sara Wordsworth. Inspired by the rhythms and sounds of life on the subway, the show follows an aspiring actress, a fledgling financier, a street-savvy beatboxer, a cab driver and others as they find their way in New York City. The seven performers take on multiple roles and create every note with their own voices, providing what’s described as a theatrical experience unlike anything ever seen (or heard) on stage before.
The creative team includes Anna Louizos (set), Jennifer Caprio (costumes), Jeff Croiter (lights) and Jon Weston (sound). Mary Mitchell Campbell is the musical director.
Primary Stages is currently presenting the New York premiere of Jonathan Tolins’ Secrets of the Trade, which is scheduled to run through September 4.
