Former Color Purple star and American Idol season three winner Fantasia Barrino was hospitalized in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 9 for a medication overdose, according to WCNC.com. Barrino was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Pineville at 8:55 PM. No specific type of medication taken by the singer has been identified, and it is unknown whether the overdose was accidental. Barrino's condition is reportedly not life threatening.
Barrino recently found herself named in a lawsuit where she is accused of having sexual relations with a married man. Court documents say the "Husband and Ms. Barrino have at times recorded their illicit sexual activity."
Barrino catapulted to fame in 2004 as the winner of American Idol, defeating Broadway vet Diana DeGarmo. Her debut album, Free Yourself, received four Grammy nominations and was followed by a second self-titled release. Barrino made her Broadway debut in April 2007 when she took over the role of Celie in The Color Purple, receiving a Theatre World Award for her performance. She later toured with the show. Barrino recently headlined her own VH1 reality series, Fantasia For Real.
