Cabaret star and Broadway vet Andrea Marcovicci (Any Given Day) will play the title role in the York Theatre Company’s concert presentation of Coco, Alan Jay Lerner and Andre Previn's musical biography of designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel. The first in the company’s Musicals in Mufti series, the show will be performed September 10-12 at the Theatre at St. Peter’s, directed by Mark Kaufmann.
Joining Marcovicci will be Jessica Grové (Sunday in the Park with George) as Noelle, Tony nominee Charles Kimbrough (Accent on Youth, Company) as Louis Greif and Kristine Nielsen (Why Torture Is Wrong, Crazy Mary) as Pignol. Coco originally opened on Broadway in 1969 starring Katharine Hepburn.
Initial casting has also been announced for Marcia Milgrom Dodge’s staging of the 1965 tuner The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd, to be presented October 1-3. The show will feature 2010 Drama Desk Award winner Jim Brochu (Zero Hour) as Sir, Quentin Earl Darrington (Ragtime) as The Negro and Josh Grisetti (Enter Laughing) as Cocky.
Rounding out the Musicals in Mufti fall season will be 1979’s I Remember Mama (October 8-10), directed by Michael Monte, and 1977’s I Love My Wife (October 22-24), directed by Carl Andress. Complete casting and creative teams for all four shows will be announced shortly.
