Broadway.com resident artist Squigs has been welcoming quite a few new stars to the Rialto lately (A Little Night Music’s Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch and Next to Normal’s Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley, for example). After a break last week to bid long-running hit South Pacific a fond farewell, Broadway Ink is back to “hello!” with Tony-winning musical In the Heights, which recently upped its musical street cred with two new stars: American Idol winner Jordin Sparks and newcomer Kyle Beltran. Squigs got all Graffiti Pete on us, splashing up the page with a sweet double portrait of the show’s new Nina and Usnavi. We think this is one Abuela Claudia would be proud to hang on her wall. Check out Sparks and Beltran, a la Broadway Ink.
About the Artist: With a desire to celebrate the magic of live theater and those who create it, and with a deep reverence for such touchstones as the work of Al Hirschfeld and the wall at Sardi’s, Squigs is happy and grateful to be among those carrying on the traditions where theater and caricature meet. He was born and raised in Oregon, lived in Los Angeles for quite a long time and now calls New York City his home. Photo by Matthew Murphy
