We love Billy Elliot, so we’re excited about the Broadway transfer of Tony winner Lee Hall’s most recent London hit, The Pitmen Painters. Tickets are now on sale for Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of this acclaimed play, which is set to begin performances on September 14 and open on September 30 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.
Hall returns to the world of miners in The Pitmen Painters, based on the true story of a group of Northumbrian miners who signed on for a course in art appreciation in 1934. While continuing their daily work underground, they went on to form friendships with the leading avant-garde painters of the day and to become sought-after artists themselves.
This humorous and moving work took home the Best Play prize from London’s Evening Standard Awards, and Broadway audiences will get to see the original English cast—Christopher Connel, Michael Hodgson, Ian Kelly, Brian Lonsdale, Lisa McGrillis, Deka Walmsley, David Whitaker and Phillippa Wilson—under the direction of Max Roberts.
The Pitmen Painters is one of the most highly regarded productions of the fall season. Get tickets now for a play you’ll never forget!
