Tickets are now on sale for The Merchant of Venice, starring Oscar and two-time Tony winner Al Pacino. Performances begin October 19 with an official opening November 7 at The Broadhurst Theatre. Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan directs.
Pacino returns in the role of moneylender Shylock in this Shakespearean tragicomedy, which debuted at that New York summer theater institution, Shakespeare in the Park. It is a role Pacino also took on in a 2004 movie version of the play. The rest of the cast has yet to be officially announced.
Considered one of Shakespeare’s most thrilling and controversial plays, The Merchant of Venice is a story of love and betrayal, forgiveness and revenge. In the play, Shylock makes a loan to Antonio, a Christian merchant. Their loan contract, steeped in prejudice and centered on the play's infamous “pound of flesh,” sweeps the two men and everyone in their worlds into chaos. Only the insightful Portia can imagine a way forward, but for her and those she loves, even "the quality of mercy" has its limits.
With Shakespeare vets Pacino and Sullivan on board, you can bet this show will be one of the season's hottest tickets—get yours today!
