Stephen R. Buntrock will step up from playing Mr. Lindquist to the lead role of Fredrik Egerman in the Broadway revival of A Little Night Music. The Broadway vet, who had also understudied Fredrik, will replace original star Alexander Hanson on September 28. Hanson is scheduled to play his final performance on September 26 at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
Buntrock played Teen Angel in the most recent Broadway revival of Grease. His other Broadway credits include Oklahoma!, Jane Eyre, Titanic, Beauty and the Beast, Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera. Touring productions include Martin Guerre and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
With a score by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler, A Little Night Music is set in a weekend country house in turn of the century Sweden, bringing together surprising liaisons, long simmering passions and a taste of love’s endless possibilities. The story centers on the elegant actress Desirée Armfeldt (Bernadette Peters) and the spider’s web of sensuality, intrigue and desire that surrounds her.
Buntrock will now perform opposite Peters as Desirée in a company that includes Elaine Stritch as Madame Armfeldt, Bradley Dean as Carl-Magnus, Erin Davie as Charlotte Malcolm, Leigh Ann Larkin as Petra, Hunter Ryan Herdlicka as Henrik Egerman and Ramona Mallory as Anne Egerman.
