With the new Broadway season getting into full swing, we asked which upcoming star turn you are most excited to catch onstage. The votes are tallied, and fans are eager to watch two-time Tony winner Patti LuPone let loose in the upcoming Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. LuPone, who will play Lucia, a wig wearing/gun toting mother in the musical adaptation of the Pedro Almodovar film, scored 31% of votes. The show will mark the first time since 1979's Evita (which won LuPone her first Tony) that the actress has originated a role in a new musical on Broadway.
Pulling up close in second place with 28% of the votes is Tony nominee Will Swenson. Broadway audiences last saw Swenson stripping down as Berger in Hair, but this spring he'll sport some very glamorous high heels, boas, lipstick and wigs to play Tick/Mitzi in the drag queen musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert. The show is gearing up for a pre-Broadway run in Toronto beginning October 12.
Third place goes to a comedic actress about to make her Broadway debut: Promises, Promises' Molly Shannon landed 17% of votes. The former Saturday Night Live star will take over as boozy barfly Marge MacDougall on October 12 when Promises' current Marge, pregnant Tony winner Katie Finneran, departs.
Thanks for voting!
