Playwright Douglas Carter Beane is reportedly taking over the bookwriting duties for the musical adaptation of the hit movie Sister Act before it arrives on Broadway next spring. According to the New York Post, Beane will be replacing current bookwriters Cheri and Bill Steinkellner and overhauling the musical before it hits the Great White Way. A production spokesperson would not confirm Beane's involvement with the show, which is playing London's Palladium through October 30.
Beane has previously written the book for musical Xanadu, and is the author of such plays as The Little Dog Laughed, As Bees in Honey Drown and Mr. and Mrs. Fitch and the upcoming The Nance.
As previously announced, the musical adaptation of the hit film comedy, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater, will begin previews at the Broadway Theatre on March 24, 2011 and open on April 20. Jerry Zaks will direct.
