How are the stars of Memphis celebrating the show's fast-approaching first Broadway birthday? Leads Chad Kimball and Montego Glover have signed on for another year in the Tony-winning musical at Broadway's Shubert Theatre. Co-stars Derrick Basin, Bernard Calloway and James Monroe Iglehart have also extended their contracts, while Cass Morgan and Michael McGrath will continue in their roles as well.
Kimball and Glover have both been with Memphis since its early days. Glover originated the role of Felicia in the San Francisco production with Kimball joining the cast for the show's engagements at Seattle's 5th Avenue Playhouse and San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse.
Memphis opened at the Shubert Theatre on October 19, 2009 and recently reached its first week of $1 million grosses. The story follows a young white DJ (Kimball) as he falls in love with everything he shouldn’t: rock 'n' roll and an electrifying black singer (Glover). The show, which will launch a national tour in October 2011, is directed by Christopher Ashley and features a book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro and music by David Bryan. Memphis won four 2010 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
