Life imitated art on October 13, when the original stars of Broadway’s Billy Elliot took in the opening night performance of Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake at New York City Center. In the famous final scene of the film Billy Elliot, an adult Billy is seen waiting in the wings, dressed as the lead swan, preparing to make his entrance in Bourne’s all-male production of the classic ballet. Dance and theater fans of all stripes came out to support the show, and two of the three Tony winning Billys, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish (they shared the award with David Alvarez), got a chance to meet the man behind this fusion of art forms. Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake bridged the gap between theater and dance when it arrived on Broadway in 1998 and went on to win three Tony Awards, including Best Choreography and Best Direction of a Musical for Bourne.
