The NYC-based HBO series Sex and the City frequently made use of Broadway actors—so it was no surprise to see stage stars pop up in the show's second feature film, the summer hit Sex and the City 2. Among the lucky actors to inhabit Carrie Bradshaw’s world: three-time Tony nominee Kelli O’Hara (South Pacific, The Light in the Piazza) who chatted with Broadway.com about her filming experience just before the movie's October 26 DVD release.
“There was a lot of eye candy,” said O’Hara, who played a wedding guest at the nuptials of Bradshaw’s friends Stanford Blanch (Willie Garson) and Anthony Marantino (Mario Cantone). “I just sat around and watched…the sets, the costumes were all unbelievable. It was like Disney World for designers. Everybody, even every single extra, was in fabulous gowns or suits.”
O’Hara herself got to indulge in Sex’s glamorous lifestyle as she sported a pair of Miu Miu heels. “I went in for fittings and tried on several different things and the hair and makeup was a big decision. Stepping into those shoes for a minute, it’s a crazy life she must lead,” she said of Carrie and her pals. As wedding guest Ellen, O'Hara shares a "small but pivotal scene" in which she chastises Ms. Bradshaw for her ambivalence about motherhood. (Ellen's in favor of it; Carrie soon jets off to Abu Dhabi.)
The film’s famous cast members and creative team were also more than welcoming. “The girls were great and so nice," she said. “[Director/writer] Michael Patrick King is such a fun director and even though I had a smaller part he made me feel very important." The highlight of the experience, however, was the wedding’s famous entertainment. “Liza [Minnelli] was there the day I was filming!” she gushed. The Tony winner performed a campy rendition of the Beyonce hit “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It).”
