Will Tom Cruise be adding a movie musical to his ever-expanding resume? According to Deadline.com, Cruise has been offered a supporting role in the film version of Broadway’s favorite ‘80s rock musical Rock of Ages. Multiple reports assert that pop country superstar Taylor Swift is in talks to play leading lady Sherrie in the musical film, and Knocked Up star Seth Rogen has reportedly been approached to play Lonny.
Cruise is being touted as a "bartender," presumably the role of Sunset Strip bar owner Dennis, currently being played on Broadway by Twisted Sister's Dee Snider. Swift, whose new album Speak Now is on track to sell a million copies in its initial week of release, has acted in the feature film Valentine's Day and appeared in an episode of CSI.
The musical is set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip, where a small town girl meets a big city rocker in L.A.’s most famous rock club. Their love story is told through the hits of Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Asia, Whitesnake and many more.
As previously reported, Adam Shankman, who helmed the movie version of Broadway musical Hairspray, will direct, and librettist Chris D’Arienzo is signed on as the screenwriter. The movie is expected to begin filming in January 2011 and to be released in 2012.
