Casting has been announced for the upcoming London production of Ghost, a new musical based on the hit film of the same name. Richard Fleeshman and Caissie Levy will star as Sam and Molly, with Andrew Langtree as Carl and the previously announced Sharon D Clarke as psychic Oda Mae Brown. The Matthew Warchus-helmed show will begin previews June 22, 2011, at London’s Piccadilly Theatre, with an official opening set for July 19.
Additional cast members include Ivan de Freitas (Willie Lopez), Adebayo Bolaji (Subway Ghost), Mark Pearce (Hospital Ghost), Lisa Davina Phillip (Clara) and Jenny Fitzpatrick (Louise). They are joined by ensemble and swing members Jaygan Ayeh, Paul Ayres, Darren Carnall, Rochelle Neil, Michael Peters, Laura Selwood, Yemie Sonuga, Spencer Stafford, Phillipa Stefani, Jez Unwin and Sally Whitehead.
Ghost is based on the 1990 film starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. Walking back to their apartment one night, Sam and Molly are mugged, and Sam is murdered on a dark street. He is trapped in this world as a ghost, and unable to leave Molly who he learns is in grave danger. With the help of a phony storefront psychic, Oda Mae Brown, Sam tries to communicate with Molly in the hope of saving and protecting her.
Levy recently appeared on Broadway and in the West End in the leading role of Sheila in Hair. Her other stage credits include Penny in Hairspray, Elphaba in Wicked and Rent.
Fleeshman was most recently seen on stage playing Warner Huntington III in Legally Blonde. He is best known for roles on British TV hit Coronation Street and, more recently, Debbie Horsfield’s All the Small Things for the BBC.
Among Clarke’s West End credits include Chicago, We Will Rock You and The Lion King; most recently she appeared as Motormouth Maybelle in Hairspray. Other theatre credits include The Vagina Monologues and Once on This Island.
Langtree has appeared on the West End in Mamma Mia, Blood Brothers and Fame. Other stage credits include The Glass Menagerie, London Assurance and Six Degrees of Separation at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre and The Rose Tattoo at the National Theatre.
Ghost will feature music and lyrics by Dave Stewart—of the Eurythmics fame—and Glen Ballard. Bruce Joel Rubin is adapting his Oscar-winning screenplay for the stage as well as writing lyrics. Set and costume designs are by Rob Howell, choreography is by Ashley Wallen with musical supervision and arrangements by Christopher Nightingale, illusions by Paul Kieve, lighting by Hugh Vanstone and projection design by Jon Driscoll.
