The work of legendary Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim may currently be represented on Broadway with A Little Night Music and West Side Story, but it's The Pee-wee Herman Show that's earned the honor of becoming the first production to play the newly named Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Broadway.com caught up with Pee-wee (played by Emmy-winning comic Paul Reubens) at his splashy November 11 opening night party to find out how he feels about his new Broadway home.
"We’re the first production in [the theater] and it's Broadway's first 'green' theater," he said. "I got an email from Stephen Sondheim himself! It was really exciting!"
So now that Pee-wee's made it to the Great White Way does he have a favorite Broadway show other than his own? "I’m not really as up on Broadway as I appear to be," he admitted, "but I’m sure it would be a Stephen Sondheim one!"
Pee-wee's thrilled to welcome audiences to his Broadway playhouse eight times a week. "It feels fantastic," he said of returning to the stage. "I feel so blessed and lucky."
