Grey’s Anatomy: The Musical? Not quite, but the ABC medical drama will be airing a musical episode later this season, Grey’s creator and head writer Shonda Rhimes recently told TVGuide.com.
Rhimes confessed that she has always wanted to do a Grey's musical episode, but now that the show is in its seventh season she finally has the space and talent to pull it off. Talent indeed: The show now counts two Broadway musical vets among its ranks. Sara Ramirez, who stars as Dr. Callie Torres, won a Tony Award for her role in Spamalot and Chandra Wilson (Dr. Miranda Bailey) counts Chicago and Caroline, or Change among her Broadway credits.
This may be a musical episode, but don’t expect any big production numbers as in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and medical sitcom Scrubs, which did an over-the-top episode guest-starring Broadway alum Stephanie D’Abruzzo. “Nobody is going to be dancing and singing down the halls; that's not our show,” Rhimes said, “Our show is known for its music. I very much wanted to do something that was musical without being a musical.”
Though no song list for the episode has been announced, Broadway standards or nostalgic pop hits—a la Glee—are unlikely to pop up. Instead, said Rhimes, the episode will “take the songs that our show has made iconic and have them be sung by our cast members, as opposed to singing Broadway songs or singing some songs by a known artist. We're simply singing songs that Grey's Anatomy has made famous.”
No air date for the episode has yet been announced.
