Marin Ireland and Juliet Rylance will join previously announced husband-and-wife movie stars Maggie Gyllenhaal (Crazy Heart) and Peter Sarsgaard (An Education) in the Classic Stage Company production of Chekhov’s Three Sisters, directed by Austin Pendleton. Ireland will play Natasha, and Rylance will play the role of Irina. Performances will begin on January 12 with opening night set for February 3.
In addition to Gyllenhaal as Masha and Sarsgaard as Vershinin, the cast includes Jessica Hecht (Olga), Josh Hamilton (Andre), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Tuesenbach), Glenn Fitzgerald (Solyony), Roberta Maxwell (Anfisa), Louis Zorich (Chebutykin), George Morfogen (Ferapont), Paul Lazar (Kulygin), Gabriel Bettio (Rode) and James Patrick Nelson (Fedotik).
Ireland most recently appeared in Lisa Kron’s In the Wake at the Public Theater. Her Broadway credits include After Miss Julie and Reasons to be Pretty, which earned her a Tony Award nomination. Off-Broadway, she has been seen in A Lie of the Mind, The Ruby Sunrise, Blasted, Cyclone, The Beebo Brinker Chronicles, Bad Jazz, The Harlequin Studies, The Triple Happiness, Manuscript and Nocturne among others.
Rylance is an Obie Award winner for her role in The Bridge Project’s As You Like It. Her other stage credits include Othello, The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet and I Am Shakespeare. Mamie Gummer, who was previously announced to play the role of Irina, withdrew from the production due to a scheduling conflict.
