George Clooney has signed on to co-produce (and likely direct) a movie version of Lucy Prebble’s play Enron, according to London’s Observer. The Oscar-winning star will join with Hollywood producer Laura Ziskin to transform the play into a feature film with a screenplay by Prebble. It’s unclear whether Clooney will appear in Enron, which tracks the downfall of the Texas-based energy company and centers on disgraced exec Jeffrey Skilling and his mentor, Kenneth Lay.
Prebble’s play became a huge hit in London and on a U.K. national tour in Rupert Goold’s high-energy production. Enron fared less well on Broadway, where it opened on April 27, 2010, and closed after a total of 38 performances.
Enron isn’t the first theatrical property to catch Clooney’s eye: He’s prepping to direct a feature film version of Beau Willimon’s play Farragut North starring Philip Seymour Hoffman as a burned-out political operative.
