Lucky Guy, a new musical comedy about the cutthroat world of the Nashville music scene, will premiere at off-Broadway’s Little Shubert Theatre next spring. Performances will begin on April 28, 2011, ahead of a May 19 opening. The show, written and directed by Broadway alum Willard Beckham, will play a 12-week limited engagement.
Lucky Guy tells the tale of an all-American singing cowboy and a cast of hilarious characters in Nashville—including the Queen of Country Music, who lives in a 28-room trailer—who are all chasing the same dream: a solid-gold, smash hit record. Featuring an array of musical styles with salutes to country, Broadway, vaudeville, bluegrass, pop, and even Hawaiian, the show weaves a tale of dreamers and schemers all willing to do whatever it takes to come out on top in Music City, USA.
Beckham earned an ASCAP Special Award for Musical Theatre for his work on Lucky Guy. As a performer, he danced in the chorus behind Carol Channing in Broadway’s Lorelei and originated roles in Broadway’s Something’s Afoot and The Utter Glory of Morrisey Hall. More recently, he returned to the New York stage in his own solo musical, Me, Myself and I.
The Lucky Guy creative team includes Rob Bissinger (set design), Paul Miller (lighting design), William Ivey Long (costume design), Kurt Fischer (sound design), Todd Ellison (orchestrations and musical supervision), and A.C. Ciulla (choreography). Cast and additional creative team will be announced at a later date.
